America's lackluster soccer

The United States played Italy last night and the team looked very lackluster. The game tied 1-1 with the US score being the result of an Italian player tipping it in for them.

I don't understand their overly cautious offense. They would have the ball and do nothing with it only passing it back and forth until the Italians would come and take it away. Other teams take the ball and instantly dash down the field towards the goal, seemingly in control of their offense.

What's up with this? Why the incredibly boring and risk averse offense? Whatever happened to the good ol' American spirit of "you don't get hurt by trying?" Why isn't there more spark, more pizzazz on the soccer field? Why do they look mostly like a bunch of safe cautious suburban guys running around? The only time they showed any level of inventiveness is when they actually did score a second goal, which could have won them the game, but one player was offsides and the point didn't count.

Are the players coming from the suburbs? Are they used to playing in perfect conditions and not used to taking chances? They've got to show some inventiveness if they ever want to get anywhere in this sport.

Seems like the U.S. didn't bring their "A" game. I don't know if the team grew up in the 'burbs, but it's likely that they didn't learn to play in empty neighborhood lots like some of the other players. It didn' help that the ref was a jackhole. I'm glad that Ecuador is doing well. I'm calling them to go all the way! Take care, Paul! - Cyn
