Much ado about flag-waving

There are flags waving all over Germany since the beginning of the World Cup. You seem them everywhere: on cars, bicycles, draped outside windows, in storefronts, on flagpoles, all over the place you run into the German flag. Whenever Germany plays the public squares where there are viewing screens are full of people displaying the flag and German colors.

Many people have told me this is the first time in their lives that they have experienced such flag-waving. It makes some people uncomfortable; it makes others proud that people feel it is normal to display national feeling. The extent of the flag-waving has made it discussion number 2 in Germany, number 1 is the World Cup itself.

I've attached a link to an interesting article on scotsman.com that deals with the flag-waving issue in Germany and the feelings it has stirred up. Check it out when you have the time!
