European hit on unilateralism

The European promotion of a peaceforce in Lebanon is construed here as a direct indictment of American unilateralism. The Italians are back in the arms of Europe with Berlusconi's loss. Rather than the cold arms of Bush the Italians are embracing a strong, unified Europe as a counterweight to the States. And participation in the United Nations peacekeeping force is seen as a win for internationalism and a blow to the unipower.

They are even writing that Bush & Co. appreciates Europe's initiative. Everyone is on good speaking terms with Condi Rice while with the same breath they blast America's folly in Iraq. Are the unilateralists becoming multilateralists? Is Cheney and his ilk giving up the reins? Much remains to be seen before this can be taken for granted.
