No official World War II peace treaty
There's no official World War II peace treaty with Germany. This is one of the startling things I have discovered since being here. I, naturally, assumed this would not be the case.
Yet, no treaty was ever signed. There was an Allied Control Council agreement that partioned Germany among the four allied powers: Britain, France, Russia and the United States. This was in effect until 1990 when a Treaty on the Final Settlement With Respect to Germany was signed by the four powers and West and East Germany. It allowed for German reunification, but was not an official end of the war. It also mandated that Soviet troops would leave Germany, that the eastern part of Germany would be a nuclear free zone, but not that the forces of the other three countries would have to leave.
Of course, the war has now been over for 70 years. But, British, French and American troops are still in Germany today.
