National unity wiping out Ostalgie
Today is the national holiday, the day of German unity. It commemorates the reunification of the two Germanies in 1990. The earlier national holiday in West Germany was June 17. It commemorated a failed uprising in East Germany that took place in 1953. This uprising was crushed by the Soviets. Strange how the old holidays referred to countries that no longer exist. The East has been completely absorbed into the West for such a long time now that I am not even certain that there is much more Ostalgie anymore in this country. Ostalgie is nostalgia for the communist East. Maybe some lingers still in the eastern parts, but you certainly don't hear of it much.
