An army separate from NATO

Germany proposed this week that the European Union have its own standing army of 100,000 soldiers. This is a first for Germany and would be a huge development for the EU. It would mean an army separate from NATO with its own mandate. Will Germany still push for this after the Democrat sweep in Congress? It is too early to tell. The Democrats mostly support a strong Europe but even they might be concerned about a military independent from NATO.
