NATO expansion and extraordinary rendition
NATO expansion and extraordinary renditions. These are two topics swirling about on TV news and in the newspapers. Some, including the US, want to expand NATO and formally recognize countries like Australia and Japan for instance. Others like the French think this would deflect from the historic European focus. The Germans I don't think have come out one way or the other in this debate. They simply don't want their troops to be shifted from Northern Afghanistan to the South. NATO of course is the force in Afghanistan spending its time killing the Taliban instead of trying to win "hearts and minds".
It turns out more and more that quite a few European countries aided and abetted the US in its extraordinary renditions. How surprising! Not so, really. Even the Europeans know which way their bread is buttered, as they say. Why not help the Americans commit their atrocities and torture? Think of how good it is for our stock markets, our currency and our way of life! Although the majority of Europeans might have been against the US unilateral war in Iraq, their governments deepen their complicity. And will anyone be surprised if terrorists strike Europe as a result?
