Will the Dems make a difference

Will the Democrats make a difference? This is on the tip of many toungues here. People inquire about the recent election, happy that Bush is weakened but unsure that much change will come about. And it's true. What will the Dems do in Iraq besides have commissions and reports criticizing the war? Now that the US is there, what will they do? Will they pull out and let civil war reign? Will they also promote staying until the Iraqi police and security forces are strengthened? The Dems want access to oil as much as Republicans do and the Dems have been just as imperialist as Republicans. Will there be a change?

We're all wondering the same thing. People are still elated that the Senate and House are Dem, but what does it mean? Nancy Pelosi is poised to make a difference, take a stand. But like everyone else, we're waiting to see.

the dems won't make a difference. as long as people in the middle class are able to pay their mortgages or their rent, they'll go along with anything. some will vote for the democrats rather than the repubs, so a different set of career politicians will set up offices and get to business. will there be a roll back on the detention act? no. will there be a roll back on legalized torture? no. NSA spying on phone lines and emails? no. the largest myth we cling to is that u.s. americans actually have some moral superiority, excercise of freedom, bravery, etc. I can hardly think of anything so contrary to fact as a fearless and defiant american. like people everywhere, we go along the path of least resistance. usually that takes the form of voting for representatives who we hope and trust will do something for us. and as long as we can pay our mortgages or rent, we'll take what we can get. maybe save a little for retirement. most of us won't or can't even do that. meanwhile the jobs we do basically create the very set up that determines the contours. renovate houses for people paying hefty mortgages to banks who book the loan as an asset enlargening their capital base. market words and pictures to sell mass produced items to more and more people. teach kids to read and write and do math so they can enter the work force and do the same. lawyers write contracts for corporations. accountants maintain books for insurance companies who collect premiums set to throw off a profit after the probability of a claim is approved or denied. the dems aren't going to change a whit of this. and if we say that this is the way it is or should be, then why talk about the need for change or making a difference. social reality, what we do with our energy and time, stays the same. if one thinks the dems make a difference, look at the clinton years, the carter years. lets face it, the american system, the american ideology, is in place. And it won't change until it has to.
sure, there's incremental change and development, evolution, etc. so over the long haul of time....sure. But that's not the same thing, is it?

I could not agree more, Jim. Well put. The Dems don't give a damn about anything other than their self interest than the Republicans. And Americans are so myopic and so self serving as to never look up from their plates.
