Bike riding transforms people into windshields!

I have recently discovered another major difference between this part of Germany and the US. Beginning last week while riding my bike around I all of a sudden started going through clouds of small black flying insects. It made me feel like a windshield. I don't know what kind of insects they are but they are perfectly harmless.

Sometimes I wonder if Germany has more insects because they don't spray here against mosquitoes. The US kills off probably billions of insects each summer in its effort to control the pesky mosquito. The German climate is too cold generally to have mosquitoes. They are actually not a problem here even in the heat of summer.
