Don't go breaking any eggs

Ever received an egg from someone on your first visit to their home? This is what happens in and around the village of Tierhaupten, Germany. The person who told me about it today did not know how long this has been done, nor the full reasons why. She also didn't know of any other villages in Germany where this was a cultural practice. Giving someone an egg historically has been understood as symbolizing redemption, a renewal of life. Could this be the reason why? Might it also symbolize the fragility of existence and the care that must be taken to nurture life? Or, is it just a way to get rid of too many eggs before they spoil?
