Soldiers and skulls

Pictures of german soldiers in Afghanistan posing with skulls were published over the weekend. This has caused a scandal for the military and the government. Heads are rolling and soldiers are being questioned and arrested.

At the same time the government and military have been flexing their muscles more. The german navy has been deployed to the Lebanon coast recently. There's talk of further german military participation in peacekeeping forces around the world. People are getting used to the military being deployed outside of the country.

What do the pictures portray? That soldiers are soldiers no matter what land they are from. The urge to battle, the will for military might and victory leads to incredible depravity and violence. Bored soldiers will rape and pillage when given the chance, and desecrate graves during other opportunities. American soldiers have their Abu Gharaib and the germans their skulls in Afghanistan.
