Break out the champagne!
Pinochet is dead! I feel like greatly rejoicing today. If there was anyone I greatly despised it was Augusto Pinochet. And his cohort Henry Kissinger. It's tragic that Pinochet passed away before he could be brought to justice for the thousands of Chileans he was responsible for killing and the coup against Salvador Allende in 1973. It's terrible that he could not have been stripped of his freedom and the wealth he amassed during his dictatorship before dying. Kissinger is still alive and should be brought to trial for various crimes against humanity, including Chile and the way he conducted the Vietnam War, particularly the bombing of Laos and Cambodia.
One of the best doc films I've ever seen is The Battle of Chile by Patricio Guzman. It is a three part film and was shot before and after the coup. The filmmakers managed to leave the country with the footage and edited this extraordinary film that deals with the overthrow of Allende. If you haven't been able to see it, try to do so. It is one of the most moving, historical movies I have ever seen.
