Don't Americans realize that ...

Don't Americans realize the implications of Guantanamo? This was the question asked of me by an 18 year old German student this week. I am teaching a one week English class for the AP high school students, preparing for their graduation/university entry exams. The school system here is incredibly different than that in the US and I will have to write a blog about that at some point. Suffice it to say that the class is an Abi Vorbereitung Englischkurs.

They asked yesterday about America, Bush and Iraq. They simply cannot believe what the US is doing. They are 18 to 21 years of age and do not at all understand how people Bush could have won two elections, how the US could wage war against Iraq and how they could absolutely deny people of their legal rights. Everything the US has represented and stood for is completely contradicted by Guantanamo, according to these students.

This gives some idea of the level of indignation and critique in Germany. And these are the opinions of young adults. These opinions will not be quickly wiped away or forgotten.

Hope you explain the electoral process with the electoral college and the allocation of votes in a winner take all(the votes in the state) system. Popular votes do not equal winner. The vote of the electoral college does.
