The European Union had its 50th Birthday!

Sunday was the 50th anniversary of the European Union. A declaration was signed by all 27 countries supporting the ideals of peace and prosperity. Free beer and brats were also given out in Berlin during the festivities. Many differing opinions have been expressed by people concerning the event. Some feel that Europe has lost its way, has no defined politics, and little resolve. Others credit the Union with keeping Europe at peace, creating tremendous economic growth and increases in peoples living standards and quality of life. Others question the recent expansion and planned future expansions, feeling enough is enough. Most decry the suits in Brussels, feeling that the EU politicians are mostly anonymous grey suits who are completely out of touch with people's needs and feelings.

Efforts to have a EU Constitution ratified and put into place could change certain things. For instance, the current draft calls for the EU to have a foreign policy minister and to speak with one voice on foreign policy. This could make Europe more assertive in world affairs and give it a stronger voice in opposition to American hegemony.
