Guantanamo reaches across to Germany

Questions are being raised about why German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, did not approve the release of a German national, Murat Kurnaz, from Guantanamo in 2002. Instead, Kurnaz, who was arrested in Pakistan in late 2001, brought first to Kandahar then to Gitmo in 2002, was not freed until 2006. American reports state that Kurnaz was not considered a threat or a terrorist. The Americans recommended that he be released. The German government, however, refused to accept this recommendation, leaving Kurnaz to languish in prison. Steinmeier claims that he was uninformed and refuses to resign.
