A very popular German TV program, Tatort, has lately been raising the ire of some of the populace. Tatort is a criminal series that attracts about 20% of all viewers. A recent December episode was about incest in an Alevi family. Alevis are a minority population in Turkey and have been the subject of accusations of incest by Sunni Muslims for centuries because they include women and children in their religious services. 20,000 people took to the streets in Cologne to demonstrate against the portrayal of Alevis.
Last Sunday Tatort actually replaced its planned broadcast with an older program. The scheduled broadcast took place in Ludwigshafen, the site of a recent fire which killed nine Turkish people, and featured a Turkish character. No real explanation was given why the program was not aired.
